Jordan, I went in expecting a straightforward space action story. What Foutin builds is more layered than the genre usually attempts. Most military science fiction gives its operative a clean mission and a universe that mostly makes sense. STORMTEAM opens with a colonization venture unravelling into something that defies the categories Daniel Storm was trained for. Foutin makes that disorientation the engine of the book. Storm is not just outgunned. He is operating in a situation where the rules of the world he knows no longer apply, which puts the reader in exactly the same position of having to recalibrate alongside him. But the thread that stayed with me was the retirement detail. I kept thinking about what Foutin is doing by pulling Storm back from that threshold specifically. A man who has decided he is done, who has already made peace with stepping away, suddenly handed something only he can handle. That framing gives the personal sacrifice real weight. Storm is not choosing between duty and comfort. He is choosing between the life he finally reached for and a universe that apparently needs him more than he needs rest.
